2016-17 Magnet Season Tours

Since the first posts about magnet tours have started coming in, here’s the official “post your magnet tour schedule here” thread. I will cut and paste all tours and magnet nights from the comments into this main post. Thanks to all who help with this list. Last year’s magnet application ‘season’ was October 1 through November 15.

This year, the deadline is November 13. That they pick Friday the 13th amuses me to no end, but do NOT try to submit in those waning hours, as you will experience delays and likely great sadness.

Meet the Magnets Middle School
Flyer 2015 2 (1) (1) High Schools

Walter Reed Middle School is having their annual Meet the High Schools night on October 7th. Last year they had over 40 High schools represented.

First, the Meet the Magnet Night for SFV-ish middle schools will be Wednesday, September 30th, at Sepulveda Middle School from 6-8 pm. Parents will attend an opening informational session followed by four 20-minute sessions put on by different schools of interest. This is a HUGE time saver for parents to see four schools in one night and figure out which schools to tour.

Meet the Magnet Night for SFV-ish high schools will be Thursday, October 1st, at Monroe High School from 6-8 pm, and again starts with an overview session and then families can break out to four sessions. Students are welcome.

2015-16 SAS Dates

Thanks to reader Sandy7656, the GATE Office has published the 2015-16 SAS dates and the application is now available online.

2015-2016 SAS Application is now available. Application Period: April 7-April 30, 2015 Notification of Applicants: May 11, 2015 http://achieve.lausd.net/Page/2033

Please post all questions on SAS in the comments, with a friendly reminder we are an all volunteer staff, mostly Valley centered, and for official answers, please contact the school/district office. Thank you!

LAUSD GATE Website Enters the 21st Century

The previous website had the info, albeit in a 1999 type format. After hanging around on it for awhile, parents could find stuff, and given the budget cuts, complaining about fancy websites isn’t my deal. But now it’s borderline fancy! Check it out here: http://achieve.lausd.net/gate

Here’s the new 2014-15 SAS link: http://achieve.lausd.net/Page/2033

SAS Application Window Open for 2014-15

While some of us are celebrating or need a little consoling, the other important window of LAUSD choice is now open.

Last year’s app is still up, but nothing is likely to change.  Start gathering the info on this, and I will repost the 2014-15 application as soon as it appears: http://www.lausd.net/lausd/offices/GATE/prog-opt-3.html

To locate schools in your area with Schools for Advanced Studies, scroll down from that link as well.

Families can apply to more than one SAS program.

Questions?  Fire away in the comments section below.

Update: the new SAS application is available HERE = and the newly redesigned LAUSD Gifted and Talented website can ba accessed here.

SAS Applications for LAUSD now available online

Families seeking SAS permits to attend schools in LAUSD should head over to the Schools for Advanced Studies website and print out an application now.  Applications can be turned in on April 2nd, but it will give families enough time to gather the necessary paperwork and do research on the SAS programs they wish to apply.

Good luck!

Required Viewing for Test Scores and Ratings

GreatSchools.org has published a short video that succinctly says what we’ve been stressing for years: test scores are only part of the story.

LAUSD does not tend to break out the scores of magnets or other programs on a campus. So a school with a gifted magnet or SAS might look higher than it is, given that a percentage of the kids are scoring significantly higher. And as mentioned in the PI section of this site, an entire school can be labeled PI because of a struggling special education or ELL population. Dual-immersion programs tend to have lower scores in the beginning, and some brave schools teach off the ‘grid’ so to speak and their students may not look like the testing machines that their friends at more traditional campuses.

Bottom line: TOUR. If you don’t put puts on the ground, talk to parents, and investigate, your student might end up in a school that looks higher, but he or she might miss out on a really great educational experience.

Schools for Advanced Studies (SAS) Dates Announced for 2013-14

LAUSD’s SAS page now has the dates for the 2013-14 SAS application season.

Student Application for the SAS Program

Application period is April 1-April 30, 2013.

With the notification of applicants: May 6-May 10, 2013.

Unlike magnet season, where all applications are treated the same in terms of date they are received, SAS spots go quickly. Get applications in the first couple days to assure the best chance of receiving a spot. Also check the school for any additional paperwork they might require.

Keep checking here in case the applications show up earlier.

2012 API Scores Released

Schools will be doing a bit of bragging or head scratching as the state has released the API scores for 2012.  You might have to be a bit creative to find some of the smaller academies.  Magnets are not broken out.  But before you head out to tour prospective magnets, look at the schools’ overall API, and ask the magnet coordinators for the magnet’s specific API scores.  Scores aren’t everything, but it’s good to know if they’re making their targets and whether they are going up…or down.  Nobel Middle School very well might be the first middle school with a 900+ API at 902.
