2013-14 Magnet Season Dates

I apologize for those of you who are still trying to get your heads around the mid-August start date, but the E-Choices website has a brief update regarding the deadlines for 2013-14 season.  The website opens Monday, October 8, 2012 and the DEADLINE for applications is Friday, November 16, 2012.  This means tours will be in September and October.

    • In previous years, there is a very small ‘late’ window–where applicants go to the bottom of the list. Very few schools ever get that far down to accept. You will not accrue points from that late list. Bottom line: Don’t be late.

      • Thanks for your fast reply. Let me tell you why I’m asking and maybe you have some good advice.
My daughter is in 6th grade and has 12 points. We have decided to keep her at her k-8th school.
My concern is that she’ll get in somewhere in 7th or 8th, since she already has so many points, and end up loosing all of her points by high school, which of course we will need.
From my understanding the points fall off every 3 years (right?) so if I don’t apply she’ll end up with not enough points for high school.
I guess I was hoping that by applying late we’d neither loose or gain any points.

        • You’d still lose the 4 oldest points from the oldest school year. Does your current middle school have a magnet of any kind? Maybe you can apply there and if she were to get in, it wouldn’t be so much of a change.

She could definitely get in with 12 points–or not. Points have been going down over the past few years. On the other hand, 8 points might not get her in where she wants to go, either. It’s a tough dilemma, one we’ve all been struggling with the past few years.

          Good luck!

  1. Just a heads up:

Word is there will be changes to the CHOICES application this year. I hear that in this year’s application you will be able to select up to 3 magnet schools. I have been trying to learn how that will impact wait list points (Do you need to be wait listed from 3 schools to get WL points? Or, if you only select one magnet school and you’re WL at that one school will that be enough to receive WL points?). I have asked these questions of various folks within LAUSD, but so far no one knows the answer. Stay tuned…

      • Right. i was also told by someone in student intergration services that there will be a 4th catagory, PSC/Magnet. The person I spoke with didn’t know what that even meant so I’m wary of even posting this info here. I was wondeirng if it meant you could apply to both a magnet AND a PSC program. We’ll just have to wait…

        • It’s only a few weeks until the site goes live. I think the PSC is the public school choice i.e. for no child left behind. As soon as it goes live we’ll know.
