Please use the comments in this post to advertise the dates for tours and magnet nights for the 2012-13 years. Magnet brochures should be available online at http://echoices.lausd.net/ on November 1st. They will be due Friday, December 16th. And Sepulveda has announced the middle school magnet night for Wednesday November 2nd, from 6 to 8 pm. As soon as Monroe posts their Meet the Magnets night, I will list it.

Justice Street School in West Hills is ACCEPTING STUDENTS through Open Enrollment and SAS Permits

Justice Street School has openings for permit and SAS. The API rose to 871 this year (up 9 points), which follows a 38-point increase the year before. They are making huge strides in meeting the academic needs of all the students. Plus they have an amazing staff and a dynamic group of parent volunteers who work together to make Justice Street School the best it can be. Justice is the “hidden gem of the valley!” Spread the word by contacting your friends and family. You do NOT have to live in the Justice Street School area. San Jose Highly Gifted Has 5th Grade Openings

Just a note to parents who might still be on wait lists for Balboa, San Jose Highly Gifted has four or five openings in fifth grade for the 2011-2012 school year. And I’ve heard parents who have been contacted by the Global Awareness Magnet in Woodland Hills at Lockhurst (?) Elementary with openings. That magnet did not get created quickly enough to make the Choices brochure, so it would appear they have openings in a few grades.

Humanitas Social Justice Academy, one of four high schools housed on the new VRHS#5 site in San Fernando has limited openings for tenth grade in the 2011-12 starting in September. Just received a phone call from someone at Vena. They still have openings for 5th grade. If you have friends with kids in the East Valley area, check out Vena–quickly. Most schools are going to be closing very soon for the summer.

CHANGES ANNOUNCED IN THE OPEN ENROLLMENT TRANSFERS
TIMELINE FOR K-12 STUDENTS FOR 2011-12
The Open Enrollment Transfers timeline has been adjusted to align with Proposition 39 decisions regarding co-location offers at District schools. The new start date for the Open Enrollment period will begin on Monday, May 9, 2011. The final Open Enrollment application date before a drawing will be on Friday, June 3, 2011.
School drawings, where necessary, will take place from June 7-10, 2011.
The deadline for accepting open enrollment transfers, if open enrollment space remains, is Friday, Sept. 23, 2011.
INSTRUCTIONS:
I. OPEN ENROLLMENT APPLICATION CALENDAR FOR ALL SCHOOLS
Open enrollment application period begins ……………..May 9, 2011
Final application date before drawing……………………….June 3, 2011
Drawing, where necessary………………………………………..June 7-10, 2011
Notification of applicants…………………………………………..June 13-17, 2011
Deadline for accepting open enrollment transfer applications, if open enrollment space remains …………………………………………………………………….September 23, 2011
Once the open enrollment deadline date has passed, no applications will be accepted until the following spring for the next school year.
II. OPEN ENROLLMENT SPACE AVAILABLE
The number of open enrollment transfer spaces authorized for the 2011-2012 school year in elementary and secondary schools will be published on May 9 and will also be posted at www.lausd.net at that time. Schools that have declared no seats available will not be listed.

Public School Choice 2.0 New Options for the San Fernando Valley

Families will have a performing arts option in Granada Hills at Balboa Blvd and San Jose Street. I will post in the comments sections when the applications are available. As a Zone of Choice, students are eligible from Monroe, Cleveland, Kennedy and Granada Hills. The school will seat 1200 students in grades 9-11 first. Because a school isn’t accredited until after it’s opened, they won’t accept 12th graders–plus the reality is that few seniors would transfer. The percentages are 30% from Monroe, 40% from Cleveland, 15% from Granada and 15% from Kennedy. Students who live within a set boundary near the school are guaranteed admission–if they choose. They also may go to their regular zoned schools. Outside that boundary but within the boundary of the four high schools, students are able to apply. In San Fernando, four separate entities will run what was a 1600 seat school near Arroyo and Glenoaks. Based on their individual proposals, it might be as many as 2600. First, the Academy of Scientific Exploration will be focused on mathematics, science, technology and medicine. At this point, there is no defined boundary, whether they will be utilizing a priority boundary or a lottery. As soon as that information is available, I will post the boundaries and deadlines.

Folks, nothing written here should trump your gut instincts or an actual visit to a school. Call. Schedule a tour. Your well-meaning neighbor might have heard something from someone who attended 10 years ago, or even a well-meaning blog yenta might have a totally different parenting style than you do. What makes me cringe might make most families flock to a particular magnet. Now back to your regularly scheduled blog posts….
